Xavier rebounds after devastation of Katrina

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Xavier University took a heavy blow from Hurricane Katrina and its floodwaters in August 2005.

But the private, Catholic institution has made a dramatic turnaround as enrollment grows, and the footprint of the campus has expanded in the years since the storm. It's in stark contrast to public universities that have struggled to come back.

The small liberal arts college has built a reputation as the university for blacks seeking medical careers. Katrina drowned the campus in floodwaters up to 8 feet deep.

Administrators estimated total losses at more than $90 million in storm damage, lost tuition and scholarship revenue.
