5-alarm fire destroys several buildings in St. Claude neighborhood

New Orleans firefighters battled a 5-alarm fire overnight in the St. Claude neighborhood. Authorities believe it started at an abandoned building, but burned through several other buildings and displaced families.

The fire broke out just before 1 a.m. near Urquhart and Press streets. Firefighters say two residences caught fire in the 2800 block of Urquhart Street, then quickly spread to a nearby warehouse and other homes.

It took 81 firefighters nearly two hours to get the fire under control.

"It winded up being a very, very large fire once it spread to a warehouse on the press street side it winded up becoming very difficult to keep it under control," said NOFD Superintendent Tim McConnell.

McConnell says the fire is under investigation. He says the abandoned buildings where the fire started also caught fire last month. He added there were no working utilities in the building and it didn't appear to be occupied.

There are no reports of injuries at this time.
