Mourners gather for funeral of slain one-year-old

New Orleans, La.- Friends and family gathered to celebrate the life of Londyn Samuels on Saturday. The one-year-old girl was shot and killed while in the arms of her babysitter on August 29, 2013.

"It hurts so much to have to bury my child," Londyn's father Keion Reed said to the crowd. "She would smile, and I just couldn't help but be happy."

All of life's potential was taken from Londyn Samuels by a bullet just after one short year of living.

"It's one of those circumstances where we can certainly say this is not God's will. God does not will the death of a child and violence and the murder that exists in our city," said Archbishop Gregory Michael Aymond.

A tiny stark white casket held the angel. Community leaders say Londyn is a pure, true and innocent victim whose death pierces the hearts of those who have watched too many parents bury their children.

"It's being visited on the streets of New Orleans, and how important it is for us as a community to say that this is an unacceptable way for us to live, and to say that it has to stop," said New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu.

It has to stop so the children in the pews with their parents celebrating Londyn's life, and all youth in New Orleans, can feel safe.

Those close with Londyn's mother say, stopping the violence is her ultimate wish now.

"She's embracing, again, the support. She realizes that in spite of, it's not going to bring little Londyn back, but how can we as a community move forward?" said Donna Bowie who worked with Londyn's mother at Cafe Reconcile.

Moving forward, but as Reed pleaded to the mourners, never forgetting Londyn Samuels.
