Metheny leads South Alabama past Tulane 41-39

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Ross Metheny threw for 290 yards, ran for another 75 and accounted for four first-half touchdowns as South Alabama held on to beat Tulane 41-39 on Saturday.

Tulane (1-1) had a chance to tie the game late after Nick Montana threw a touchdown pass to Ryan Grant with 1:19 remaining, but Montana threw an incomplete pass on the two-point conversion attempt. South Alabama (1-1) then ran out the clock after a failed onside kick.

The Jaguars raced to a 28-7 lead early in the second quarter behind Metheny with scores on four of their first five possessions, which included a 35-yard touchdown run by Metheny in the opening minute. Metheny then threw a 14-yard TD to Shavarez Smith, a 30-yarder to Davin Hawkins and ran for a 12-yard score.

Montana, who took the Green Wave 82 yards on their final drive, threw for 327 yards and three touchdowns.

The AP preseason poll came out today, and of course Alabama is No. 1. I'm going to breakdown a few teams in my Top 25. This is the 9th year I'm doing an AP poll. Fist off, no shock, I have the Tide in the top spot. Jalen Hurts, Tua Tagovailoa, doesn't matter who's at QB. Week one they play Louisville in Orlando. Right now they're only 24-point favorites. Georgia holds No. 2 in my poll. Another year of Jake Fromme under center is a great reason to have the Dawgs here. South Carolina ...more>>
