NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Ross Metheny threw for 290 yards, ran for another 75 and accounted for four first-half touchdowns as South Alabama held on to beat Tulane 41-39 on Saturday.
Tulane (1-1) had a chance to tie the game late after Nick Montana threw a touchdown pass to Ryan Grant with 1:19 remaining, but Montana threw an incomplete pass on the two-point conversion attempt. South Alabama (1-1) then ran out the clock after a failed onside kick.
The Jaguars raced to a 28-7 lead early in the second quarter behind Metheny with scores on four of their first five possessions, which included a 35-yard touchdown run by Metheny in the opening minute. Metheny then threw a 14-yard TD to Shavarez Smith, a 30-yarder to Davin Hawkins and ran for a 12-yard score.
Montana, who took the Green Wave 82 yards on their final drive, threw for 327 yards and three touchdowns.
