Man drives car through front gate of Angola prison

New Orleans -- Authorities are investigating an incident where a man drove a car through the front gate of the Angola State Prison. The incident occurred Sunday at 2:34 p.m. The suspect has been identified as Floyd Tillman.

According to a spokesperson with the Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections, officers working the front gate of the Louisiana State Penitentiary reported that a suspicious vehicle approached and retreated from the front gate, numerous times. The car crashed through the gate shortly thereafter. The officers working the front gate, fired their weapons at the car, attempting to stop it. Tillman's car came to a stop at 2:57 p.m. after being chased by state troopers. The chase came to a stop after a head-on collision on top of the levee that circles the facility.

It was discovered that Tillman had two young children in the car with him. According to the West Feliciana Sheriff's Department, the two children in Tillman's possession were kidnapped. No injuries have been reported. Tillman was taken into custody by West Feliciana Sheriff's Deputies.

Warden Burl Cain states, "All is secure at the prison at this time as this incident chiefly occurred at the prisons perimeter. Investigations into the reasons why Tillman chose to come to the prison today are on-going."
