Congressional leaders asked to tie flood insurance issue to budget bill

Washington, D.C. - People worried about soaring flood insurance rates may see congress take action on the issue in just a matter of weeks.

Seven members of Louisiana's Congressional delegation sent a letter to Senate and House leaders today, urging them to include language that would prevent FEMA from raising rates on some properties in whatever legislative vehicle is used to fund the federal government.

The properties involved are homes and businesses that were built to code and later considered higher-risk areas when they were re-mapped.

Congress needs to pass a budget bill by Oct. 1. If it does not, the U.S. faces a shutdown threat.
