Congressman Scalise opposes US strike on Syria

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise has become Louisiana's latest congressman to reject the idea of a U.S. military strike on Syria. Scalise, a Republican from Metairie, announced Tuesday that he would vote against President Barack Obama's proposal for a strike against the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad.

The congressman said in a statement that Obama hadn't made the case that intervention was in America's best interest.

He said he worried the U.S. would be involving itself "in a civil war where there are bad actors on both sides." Scalise joins other GOP members of Louisiana's congressional delegation in opposition to the president's proposal.

Sen. David Vitter and Reps. Charles Boustany and John Fleming have said they will vote against it, and Rep. Rodney Alexander said he likely will oppose it.
