New Orleans, La. - New Orleans Saints running back Darren Sproles took a big lick from Tampa Bay safety Dashon Goldson Sunday. Now, Goldson is paying the price. Goldson has been suspended by the NFL for one game, without pay.
It happened in the second quarter when Goldson went helmet to helmet with Sproles, knocking Sproles head over heels.
A letter from league President of Football Operations Merton Hanks, himself a former defensive back in the NFL, stated the following:
"You had an unobstructed path to your opponent. It is clear that you lowered your head and unnecessarily rammed the left side of your helmet into the left side of your opponent's head. You delivered a forceful blow with your helmet and made no attempt whatsoever to wrap up your opponent or make a conventional tackle on the play. This illegal contact clearly could have been avoided."
The Saints are now 2-0 after getting last licks in Tampa, winning 16-14 at the very end of the game. Next up are the Arizona Cardinals for a noon kickoff Sunday at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
