Houma high school student starts fire in girls' bathroom

HOUMA, La. - An Ellender High School student was arrested on a count of simple arson after starting a fire in the school's bathroom.

According to the Houma Police Department, a paper towel dispenser in the girls' bathroom was lit on fire on Monday, Sept. 16. By the time school officials got to the bathroom the fire was out, but damaged the restroom.

School officials checked surveillance video and saw that Crystal Lagarde was the last person to leave the restroom before the fire. School officials looked for Lagarde, but she left school grounds the day of the fire then didn't come to school the next day.

Lagarde was arrested on Sept. 18 when she came to school on one count of simple arson. When asked why she started the fire, she said "I was just being stupid."
