Saenger Theatre to reopen Friday

NEW ORLEANS, La. - Those who describe the Saenger Theatre as the "jewel of Canal Street" don't have to wait much longer to see it sparkle again.

Friday, Sept. 27,  will mark the opening of the historic Saenger after a massive, $53 million overhaul.

The upgrade includes red velvet seats replicated to match the original 1927 design.

General Manager David Skinner promises patrons will be amazed at dozens of what he says are "state-of-the-art" improvements.

New Orleans Citybusiness editor Greg Larose describes the Saenger's comeback as part of an overall strategy by civic and business leaders.

Larose says the goal is to tempt more people to patronize not only the Saenger, but also the newly redeveloped Civic and Joy theatres, and thereby breathe new life into the city's once-thriving theatre district.

The Saenger's grand opening celebration will include a free concert on Oct. 2.

The Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra will set the tone musically for the event. It plans to perform selections from famous movies that played at the Saenger during its heyday in the 1930s and 1940s.
