Saints players support Malcolm Jenkins Foundation

NEW ORLEANS - The Saints pulled off an impressive win against the Arizona Cardinals Sunday, but Monday night, some members of the team shifted their focus to help children in need.

Leaving the helmets and uniforms at home, some members of the Saints donned their Sunday best to walk the purple carpet at City Park's Pavilion of the Two Sisters. The star power isn't for a Saints team function, it's a benefit for the Malcolm Jenkins Foundation, a non-profit aimed at improving the lives of under-served youth in the community.

"We bring life skills to kids, we teach them about leadership, health and wellness, confidence-building and all the things you need to be a well-rounded individual," Jenkins said.

Over the past few years, the foundation has handed out more than $30,000 in scholarships. But Jenkins isn't the only one doing charity work.

"What's so great about our team is we've got great guys, great football players, but what a lot of people don't know is you've got a lot of guys that have their own foundations or are constantly wanting to give back to the community," said quarterback Drew Brees.

Saints fans say it's nice to see the players doing something positive off the field.

"It seems like more than ever the Saints players are really active in the community," said Chris Russo.

Catherine Ash added, "I think that's great. I think that's one of the reasons why the Saints are a good team, a good model for kids here."

Before the Malcolm Jenkins event, other teammates joined Rita Benson LeBlanc at a breast cancer fundraiser. Thomas Morstead said he and others feel a need to set a good example.

"I just feel like a responsibility," he said. "Fans cheer us on, and we're like the No. 1 thing going in the city. We're a big part of people's lives here, and it's just part of the deal. I just love doing it."
