NEW YORK - Nineteen companies accused of posting fake reviews online will pay $350,000 in penalties.

New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman says he caught the companies posting fake reviews about restaurants and other businesses in a year-long investigation.

In some cases, companies paid freelance writers up to $10 for each positive review.

According to USA Today, a one-star increase in a company's rating on Yelp can produce as much as a nine percent increase in revenue.
