Chief Serpas delivers anticipated manpower report

Updated:

NEW ORLEANS - Chief Ronal Serpas came before the City Council's Criminal Justice Committee to deliver his anticipated manpower report.

He started by saying the NOPD is doing all that it can to recruit new officers. The NOPD launched its first online recruitment campaign, along with other advertising efforts.

Serpas said his department is funded for 1,260 officers. A recruit class of 24 is under way, with an anticipated graduation date of Nov. 22.

Serpas said he's confident there will be another class this year, and he hopes to have three additional classes in 2014.

He pointed out that recruits must wait between 170 and 180 days from submitting their application to being hired.

He said there are fewer NOPD officers leaving the department now than in previous years.

Council members pointed to several seasoned NOPD officers who are working in administrative positions instead of being on the street. Serpas told the Council he'd need an additional $1.2 million from the city to put those officers in the field and hire civilians for those jobs.

Council members said they'll consider that additional funding in the future.
