Officials: Nucor plant incident was structure collapse - not explosion

CONVENT, La. - The St. James Parish officials said what was initially thought to be an explosion Wednesday at the Nucor iron plant in Convent was actually the collapse of a storage dome.

Investigators say the dome collapsed a little after 3 p.m. No one was injured.

St. James Parish President Tim Roussel said there was no threat to public health.

Nucor's plant manager said the collapse is under investigation.

"At this point, we're evaluating exactly what happened," said Lester Hart. "We don't know at this point, and the impact on start-up and all that, which - the plant is still under construction. We won't know until we assess the damage."

The $750 million plant was in the final stages of preparation before going into full production.
