Bollinger to build 6 more fast Coast Guard cutters

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Bollinger Shipyards of Lockport has a $250.7 million contract for six more fast response cutters for the Coast Guard.
The Coast Guard said in a news release Wednesday that it had ordered the cutters for delivery in 2016.
They bring the total number of the boats under contract with Bollinger to 24, and the contract's total value so far to $1.1 billion, the agency said.
Seven of the 154-foot boats have been delivered to the Coast Guard, and six have been commissioned. The seventh is to be commissioned in Key West, Fla., in November.
The Coast Guard said in 2009 that it plans to build 58 of the boats to replace aging 110-foot patrol boats.
Using money from this fiscal year will save $5 million per boat for a total of $30 million, U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., said in a news release.
The money approved Wednesday was part of a total $9.3 billion in discretionary funding allocated to the Coast Guard in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's budget for this fiscal year, she said.
Landrieu said the six additional boats will be homeported in Pascagoula, Miss.; Ketchikan, Alaska; and Honolulu.
