Orleans Parish inmate dies in apparent suicide

NEW ORLEANS - Police are reporting that an inmate with a history of psychiatric problems died in an apparent suicide this morning.

Clifton Morgan, 28, died of what appears to be self-inflicted asphyxiation. Morgan was arrested by the NOPD on charges of simple burglary and a probation violation on Sept. 16.

On Sept. 17, Morgan had his initial mental health screening and was placed on suicide watch based on the results. About a week later, Morgan was transported to LSU Interim Hospital for evaluation and then returned to the psychiatric tier in Orleans Parish Prison for continued watch.

Police say Morgan was held in a cell directly across from the watch warden's office and was frequently checked on. When the watch commander found Morgan unresponsive, he notified the medical staff immediately.

Despite the efforts of the on-site physician and nurses, Morgan was pronounced dead at 12:08 a.m. this morning

A preliminary autopsy confirmed death by asphyxiation The Sheriff's Office's investigation is continuing.

"We are saddened and our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Mr. Morgan," Sheriff Marlin Gusman said.  "Although it is infrequent, the death of an inmate is an unfortunate reality that all jails face, and one we continuously strive to prevent."
