Partial government shutdown impacts region

NEW ORLEANS, La. - Tourists strolling through the French Quarter were faced with the reality of a partial government shutdown.

"We came down here to see the parks and we were very disappointed to see it closed," said Susan Brown.

National parks are shuttered to the public. A sign is taped to the door of the French Quarter Visitors Center in the Jean Lafitte National Park building on Decatur Street. The gates of the Chalmette Battlefield are locked.

The park sites normally have a combined 2,300 visitors a day.

"Sixty-five of our employees are furloughed, and we have some essential employees who will stay on duty," said Jean Lafitte National Historical Parks spokeperson Kristy Wallisch.

Only four law enforcement rangers will remain on the job. Non-essential personnel had until noon Tuesday to get their office affairs in order.

Throughout the country, more than 800,000 government workers were sent home, while thousands of others will receive delayed checks.

"We're a consumer-based economy, and if people aren't purchasing consumer goods, that's going to be a drag on the overall economy," said UNO political scientist Ed Chervenak

The World Wide Web also became less accessible with major government agencies entirely offline. Government services were scaled back and federal home loans have been put on hold.

"We know that the housing market is now starting to pick up," Chervenak said. "This will put the brakes on some of that momentum and scale back on the recovery we're experiencing right now."

Tourists and locals alike are now hoping for a quick resolution to the first partial governmental shutdown in nearly two decades.
