New Orleans firefighter injured while battling 1-alarm blaze

NEW ORLEANS - A New Orleans firefighter was injured Wednesday when he fell from the attic of an abandoned home while fighting a one-alarm fire.

The fire at a two-story, wood-framed vacant duplex in the 1600 block of N. Claiborne Ave. out at 7:51 p.m. The first company arrived on the scene at 7:55 p.m. and found substantial fire and smoke coming from near the first-floor entrance and extending through the second floor, according to a Fire Department news release.

"While performing an interior attack of the fire, an NOFD Fire Captain fell 12 feet from the attic landing on the first floor and injuring his back," the release said.

The captain was hospitalized but has been released. Evidence found at the scene led fire investigators to determine that the fire was intentionally set. Neighbors in the area stated that vagrants frequented the structure and materials found inside supported that claim, the Fire Department said.

Anyone with information as to who may have started the fire is asked to contact the NOFD at 504-658-4713. All statements will remain confidential.
