Slidell High counselor killed in motorcycle accident

Slidell, La. - A north shore high school counselor and her husband were killed in a motorcycle accident Sunday afternoon in McComb, Mississippi. A spokesman for Mississippi State Highway Patrol has identified the victims as Carrie and Samuel Speer, both 57 years old. Slidell High School confirms that Carrie Speer was a guidance counselor at the school.

The couple were both on a motorcycle, traveling on the southbound on-ramp of I-55, when the accident occurred. Mississippi Patrol spokesman Rusty Boyd says the motorcycle failed to yield to traffic when it was struck from behind by a car heading south. The impact knocked the couple into the cable barriers on I -55 near Exit 20.

Samuel Speer, the driver of the motorcycle was pronounced dead on the scene. Carrie Speer was transported to Southwest Medical center in McComb, then airlifted to University Medical Center in Jackson where she later died. No charges have been filed against the driver of the car.

Carrie Speer was an employee of the St. Tammany Parish school system for 27 years. She worked as a teacher at Northshore High before moving to Slidell High. Most recently, Mrs. Speer served as guidance counselor for seniors at Slidell High. Guidance counselors are being made available for both students and teachers at the school.
