Jindal praises partnership at Houma hospital

HOUMA, La. - Gov. Bobby Jindal says the community is already seeing a difference in the first four months of the public-private partnership at Chabert Medical Center.

Jindal stopped by the facility Monday as part of his 64-parish tour.

The number of patient visits increased 20 percent in just the first month, and the hospital is adding more staff and equipment. Chabert now offers digital mammography, replacing its outdated machines with two new ones that can produce same-day imaging.

"Chabert has also been able to hire new physicians to serve more patients in the bayou region," says Jindal. "A new cardiologist who was hired as a result of the partnership has already been able to treat 60 additional patients per month since joining the staff."

This is big news for a facility facing severe cuts at this time last year, when the LSU governing board approved a plan to cut more than $150 million from the Charity hospital system.

Leaders in Terrebonne and Lafourche parishes, along with Terrebonne General Medical Center and Ochsner, all stepped up to make sure this facility stayed open.

"We couldn't afford to stop providing these services in our communities," says Jindal. "This is a critical, critical provider of services to people who would have no where else to go. It's not right to say to people in the bayou region, 'you've gotta go to New Orleans.'"

Chabert Medical Center serves thousands of poor and uninsured people across the bayou region.
