Brazen gunman robs popular Magazine St. restaurant

NEW ORLEANS - The General Manager of The Bulldog, Joey Knesel, said about 70 patrons were inside his bar at about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday when an armed robber entered Byblos restaurant next door.

"The guy had went in the back door with a gun," Knesel said.

Police said the gunman approached the manager and demanded money out of the restaurant safe.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene in the dining area of the restaurant when waiters and patrons figured out what was going on in the back.

"While they were talking, the cook and the dishwasher guy, the kitchen staff and one of the waiters all booked it out of the front door basically," Knesel said.

Police say the manager complied with the gunman's demands and the suspect took off.

The NOPD quickly arrived on the scene.

"They came around basically saying, 'no body leave for a while,'" Knesel said.

Knesel said patrons of The Bulldog and other businesses along Magazine St. were forced to stay inside for hours while officers searched the area. At about 11:30 p.m., people were allowed to leave. The suspect was never found.

Reginelli General Manager Travis Rhodes said he's making sure his employees remain vigilant.

"I'm definitely not going to let my employees go walking to their cars by themselves," Rhodes said.

Knesel calls what happened a reality check.

"It keeps us on our toes and makes us revisit some policies, you know?" he said.

He hopes the gunman is caught soon.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crimestoppers at (504) 822-1111.
