NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The city of New Orleans will put up $1.88 million to pay for extra security personnel and improve medical care at the city's jail under an agreement announced Monday during a brief hearing in U.S. District Court.
The money covers jail improvements required under a federal court order.
The payment was described in court records as "interim funding" for the year 2013. However, political wrangling is likely to continue. The City Council, the mayor's office and the sheriff still must work out budgets for future years that continue to fund the improvements.
