Suspected gunmen arrested in Algiers murder

NEW ORLEANS - Members of NOPD's Violent Offenders Warrants Squad (VOWS) on Monday arrested one suspected gunman for a murder that happened in Algiers a few weeks ago.  A second man, who was already jailed on unrelated charges, was also booked in the killing.

VOWS picked up 18-year-old Brent Riggins on Horace Street. He is accused in the fatal Oct. 4 shooting of 18-year-old Jared Hester in the parking lot of an apartment building in the 1500 block of Southlawn Boulevard.

On Saturday, 18-year-old Aaron Thibodeaux was arrested in the case.

Both Riggins and Thibodeaux were booked with second-degree murder.

Within minutes of the shooting, officers with the Fourth District Task Force were on the scene, chased and caught the two suspects. They also located one of the murder weapons that the suspects had tried to discard. Riggins and Thibodeaux were taken in for questioning, but at the time there was not enough evidence to arrest them.

Through further investigation and forensic testing performed on the retrieved weapon, arrest warrants were obtained.

Riggins was previously arrested for carnal knowledge of a juvenile and municipal attachments. Thibodeaux has been previously arrested for illegal carrying of weapons, flight from an officer, criminal trespass and bail jumping.

A third suspect is believed to have taken part in Hester's murder.  Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call CrimeStoppers at (504)822-1111.
