Tugboat capsizes in Mississippi River; 5 people rescued

New Orleans, La. - The New Orleans Fire Department, Harbor Police, and the Coast Guard responded to a capsized tug boat on the Mississippi River.

It happened around 9:30am near the Louisiana Avenue Wharf.

A sergeant with Harbor Police says the tug boat, the Kristen Alexis, got caught up in a large wake caused by a passing ship. The tug flipped over sending five people into the water.

Harbor Police say all five were rescued by a passing tug boat and taken to the Harbor Police station. The tug is completely submerged.

The sunken tug, built in 1978, is owned by Marquette Transportation Company in Harahan.

The Coast Guard says they will be conducting a pollution assessment to determine if there were any environmental impacts.

The river is not closed to other river traffic, but an urgent marine warning was issued to notify other vessels of the sunken tug.
