NEW ORLEANS - When Martez Wilson was inactive against New England, a signal was clearly sent. Either Wilson wasn't picking up Rob Ryan's system, or his skill set just wasn't a fit. Maybe it was both.
All we know for sure is Wilson is no longer on the Saints roster.
Count me as one of the many that are a bit shocked that he was the player they subtracted to make room for Ryan Griffin's addition.
There was no doubt he was struggling to find a place. The Saints really haven't used much 3-4 in their alignment. And when they have, Wilson was not in the rotation at the "jack" like many thought he would. Ryan has mostly gone with guys like Parys Haralson and, at times, Ramon Humber.
I just didn't think they would part ways this quickly. Wilson was taken in the third round in the 2011 draft and before this year appeared to be a player on the rise.
I guess the Saints no longer feel that way.
There is a small chance Wilson could clear waivers and return back to the Saints, should they choose to re-sign him. But the likelihood is Wilson's days in black and gold are done.
