Plans unveiled to mark Battle of New Orleans bicentennial

New Orleans, La. - Lt. Governor Jay Dardenne and the Battle of New Orleans Bicentennial Commission are unveiling plans for commemorating the 200th anniversary of the Battle of New Orleans.

Events will be held throughout the state next year to commemorate the time when Andrew Jackson defeated the British army in Chalmette.

Events including museum exhibits and re-enactments will culminate with a formal commemoration Jan. 8, 2015, the 200th anniversary of the Battle.

In addition to events, Lt. Governor Dardenne unveiled the 2014 general-issue license plate that features the Battle of New Orleans Commission logo.

Plate distribution will begin at motor vehicle offices throughout the state in early 2014.

The Office of the Lt. Governor is also producing an education curriculum to be distributed throughout the state to K – 12 teachers. The curriculum will focus on the Battle and its importance in positioning Louisiana as a powerhouse in the young nation.
