Middle school student allegedly sets teacher on fire

BATON ROUGE, La. - An eighth-grade student at a Baton Rouge middle school was arrested and expelled after police say he lit a substitute teacher's burqa on fire.

The Westdale Middle School substitute teacher told investigators just moments before the incident that she had reprimanded the student for misbehaving. Police say that's when the 14-year-old lit her burqa on fire with a cigarette lighter.

The incident happened Oct. 3. Several parents of students who attend Westdale complain they were not aware of the incident.

The School Drug Task Force took the teen into custody.  He was charged with aggravated assault on a school teacher and booked into juvenile detention.

The teacher was treated at the middle school and is good condition.
