Tulane downs Tulsa, becomes bowl-eligible for first time in 11 years

Updated:

It's been 11 years, but Tulane can finally say, "Hey we're bowl eligible."

Thanks to a stifling Wave defense, that forced four turnovers, Tulane triumphed 14-7 over Tulsa. The win puts the Wave at 6-2 on the season. The last time the Wave went "bowling" was 2002 with JP Losman playing quarterback.

Starting quarterback Nick Montana sat out for his second game in a row with a shoulder injury, giving Devin Powell the controls against Tulsa.

For Powell it was another serviceable performance like his last time out against East Carolina. A triple overtime win putting the Wave in first place in the CUSA West division.

Powell's bad side was exhibited in the first quarter of a scoreless game. Cornerback Will Barrow of Tulsa picked-off an errant pass by Powell, returning it 64 yards to the Tulane 5-yard line . On fourth and goal from the 1-yard line, Tulsa's Trey Watts punched it in to put the Golden Hurricane up 7-0.

In the second quarter Powell righted his wrong. He led the Wave on a 13-play, 80-yard drive ending with a fantastic grab by Justyn Shackleford for a 19-yard TD. That knotted the contest at seven going into halftime.

Two combined interceptions by the Wave's Darion Monroe and Jordan Sullen also kept the game tight throughout the first half.

In the second half Powell's confidence was evident. The first quarter problems were replaced with tight throws.  The O.P. Walker alum led a nine-play, 70 yard drive, ending with a 33-yard Ryan Grant touchdown grab. The Wave led 14-7 halfway through the third quarter.

The Wave defense held Tulsa without a score in the second half. A Lorenzo Doss interception, and a Zach Davis fumble recovery stunted all Golden Hurricane drives.

The Wave are tied for first in CUSA West Division with Rice at 4-0.
