New Orleans police officer shot in leg during Central City pursuit

NEW ORLEANS - A New Orleans police officer was shot in the leg Monday during the pursuit of a suspect in Central City.

The shooting happened at about 9:45 p.m. at Third and LaSalle Streets.

Superintendent Ronal Serpas said two officers were on "saturation patrol" as part of a plan to address a recent spike in carjackings and other crimes in the area. He said the officers spotted a young man who made eye contact with them and acted in a way that the officers thought was suspicious.

Serpas said the suspect began to run and fire at the officers, striking one of them in the leg.  One or both of the officers returned fire.  But the suspect was not hit.

A perimeter was set up and a K-9 unit was deployed.  A police spokesman says a suspect was captured around 12:30 a.m.  He was taken to the hospital to be treated for a dog bite.

The shooting is still under investigation.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Crimestoppers at (504) 822-1111. Callers may remain anonymous and could be eligible for a cash reward for tips that lead to an arrest and indictment.
