NOPD manpower at issue during budget hearing

New Orleans, La. - The New Orleans Police Department manpower became a big part of the city council's budget discussion Wednesday with Chief Ronal Serpas.

Of the roughly 1,200 sworn officers, about 700 actually patrol the streets.

Chief Serpas says next year's budget should allow for five new recruit classes which would bring in around 150 new officers.

City council members also talked about giving police officers a raise, but they do not believe high ranking officers should get them.

Also in next year's budget, money will be allocated so that every police officer will have body cameras.
