Audit: Jefferson Parish non-profit misspent $700,000

A legislative audit uncovers massive mis-spending by a Jefferson Parish non-profit formed to help the elderly, disabled and low-income with home repairs.

The report reveals the Thompson-Thibodeaux Development Corporation misspent or misused $700,000.

The audit found the money was misused by relatives and acquaintances of former Jefferson Parish councilman Byron Lee, his successor, Councilman Mark Spears and former state Senator Derrick Shepherd.

The organization was founded at St. Mary Baptist Church in Marrero back in 2001. The audit says Lee casted votes for $1.5 million dollars in public money to the non-profit. But, the audit alleges the money was used to pay relatives, unqualified contractors, and hire firms that did no work at all.
