Buras man arrested for 21st time after alleged robbery, battery

Empire, La. - A Buras man allegedly robbed and battered an acquaintance in a bar parking lot, stealing his cell phone, cash and earning his 21st arrest.

On Nov. 3, at about 6:45 p.m., the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff's Office received a call reporting a simple robbery in the parking lot of the Ugly Duck bar in Empire.

During the investigation, deputies learned that the 33-year-old victim was allegedly beaten and robbed by Derrick Lee "Chico" Washington of Buras, La. The victim said that he and Washington were involved in a verbal argument before Washington allegedly hit the victim several times and took $40 in cash and his Apple iPhone 4 before fleeing the scene.

Police arrived at Washington's house where he voluntarily agreed to go with them to the 2nd District station to further the investigation. During questioning, Washington allegedly admitted that he struck the victim several times while straddling him as he laid on the ground. Washington allegedly said that after the fight he went back to his house and changed his shirt because it had the victim's blood on it.

Detectives obtained a search warrant and searched Washington's residence where they recovered two bloody T-shirts and recovered the victim's cell phone. Investigators also found a small amount of marijuana and a scale in Washington's house mate, Deandre Avist's, bedroom.

Washington was arrested and charged with simple robbery, simple battery, being a fugitive from Jefferson Parish and a State Parole violation. Washington remains in the custody of the Sheriff's Office on $102,500 bond and a State Parole hold.

Washington has been arrested 20 times since 1988. He has prior felony convictions for possession of cocaine, distribution of cocaine, possession with the intent to distribute cocaine, simple burglary, aggravated battery and simple robbery. At the time of his arrest, Washington was on State Parole out of East Baton Rouge District Office for two counts of distribution of cocaine, which said convictions occurred in Plaquemines Parish in 1995.
