Kenner Police Department investigates shooting involving officer

Updated:

KENNER, La. - A kenner police officer opened fire on a man suspected of stealing a car as he allegedly attempted to run the officer over.

Around 7 p.m. Nov. 9, the Kenner Police Department found a stolen vehicle using a License Plate Recognition camera. Officers then located the car in the 3500 block of Martinique Avenue.

The vehicle, a white Nissan Altima, was reported stolen during a residential burglary that occurred on Oct. 24.

A uniformed police officer approached the vehicle and saw a male suspect lying back in the driver's seat with the ignition running, possibly to avoid being seen. The officer attempted to talk to the suspect, but the suspect began rapidly accelerating the car towards the officer.

Fearing for his life, the officer shot his gun, striking the suspect inside the car. The suspect was then transported to a local hospital where he remains in serious condition and the incident remains under investigation.
