New Orleans, La. - The Saints dominated the Cowboys on national television by a final score of 49-17 and in doing so, etched their names in the record books.
The following are a collection of statistics compiled by the New Orleans Saints:
The Saints set a franchise and NFL record with 40 first downs. The previous record of 39 was held by the New York Jets (Nov. 27, 1988 vs. Miami), Washington (Nov. 4, 1990 vs. Detroit, OT) and Houston (Nov. 18, 2012 vs. Jacksonville, OT).
The Saints finished with 625 total yards, a franchise record for the regular season. The previous mark of 617 was set on Jan. 1, 2012 vs. Carolina. (The Saints gained 626 yards in a playoff victory over Detroit on Jan. 7, 2012). The 625 yards is the most by an NFL team in a non-overtime regular season game since San Diego gained 661 yards against Cincinnati on Dec. 20, 1982.
According to the website database Pro Football Reference, the Saints are the first team since 1960 (and perhaps ever) with at least 230 rushing yards and 380 passing yards in the same game.
QB Drew Brees completed 34 of 41 passes for 392 yards and four touchdowns and a passer rating of 139.0.
Brees' four touchdown passes increased his career total to 349, moving him past Tom Brady into fourth place on the NFL's career list. Brady and the New England Patriots had a bye on Sunday.
The four-TD pass performance was the 23rd of Brees' career, tying him for second in NFL history with Brett Favre. Only Peyton Manning (26) has more.
Brees' multiple-touchdown pass game was the 107th of his career. Brees trails only Brett Favre (159), Peyton Manning (144), Marino (127) and Tom Brady (111).
Brees' 300-yard passing game was the 74th of his career – second in NFL history to Peyton Manning's 80 – and his 67th in 120 career games as a Saint.
Brees topped the 200-yard passing mark for the 39th straight game.
Brees started the game 2-for-4 before completing his next 19 passes, tying his own Saints franchise record. Brees finished the first half 26-for-30 for 252 yards and three TDs. The 26 first-half completions matched the highest total in the NFL this season.
WR Marques Colston caught seven passes for a season-high 107 yards and a first-quarter 22-yard touchdown.
All of Colston's 60 career touchdown receptions have come from Brees. They became the seventh quarterback-receiver combination in NFL history to reach the 60 TD plateau.
Colston's 100-yard game was the 24th of his career, second in Saints history behind Joe Horn's 27.
Colston heads into next week's game just 11 yards behind Eric Martin's franchise record for career receiving yards. Colston has 7,843 yards, Martin 7,854.
RB Mark Ingram had his first career 100-yard game, rushing for 145 yards on 14 carries (a 10.4 average) and a 4-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
RB Pierre Thomas had 17 rushes for a season-high 87 yards and a touchdown. He also caught seven passes for 27 yards and another score. It's the first time since 2009 Thomas has had a rushing and receiving TD in the same game.
Behind Ingram and Thomas, the Saints rushed for 242 yards as a team, the highest total by a Saints offense since Nov. 4, 1990 at Cincinnati, when New Orleans rushed for 249 yards.
The Saints' second touchdown drive covered 80 yards in 15 plays and took 8:56 off the clock. The last Saints scoring drive of more plays and time was on Dec. 18, 2011 at the Minnesota Vikings – a 19-play, 87-yard drive that elapsed 10:36 off the clock.
The Saints held the Cowboys to 193 total yards, the fewest allowed by a Saints defense since holding the New York Giants to 142 yards on Dec. 24, 2006.
The 432-yard differential in total yardage is the third-highest in the NFL in the last 25 years. Philadelphia outgained San Francisco by 441 yards (583-142) on Sept. 18, 2005, and New England outgained Tennessee by 433 yards (619-186) on Oct. 18, 2009.
CB Corey White had passes defensed on back-to-back plays late in the second quarter, forcing a Cowboys punt that set up a Saints touchdown drive in the final minute of the half.
DE Glenn Foster's third-quarter sack of Tony Romo was his third of the season. In the fourth quarter, OLB Parys Haralson and DE Tom Johnson had sacks on consecutive plays.
