Hundreds of local WrestleMania fans get first shot at tickets for 2014 event

NEW ORLEANS - On Friday, wrestling fans poured into Champions Square by the hundreds - braving long lines and, at times, heavy rain showers to claim their spot inside the Mercedes-Benz Superdome for advance tickets to WWE's WrestleMania XXX, which rolls into town in April.

They showed up to take part in a special ticket presale party that gave fans in the metro area the first shot at buying tickets, before they go on sale to the general public Saturday morning.

"This is a dream come true," said fan Nicholas Figueroa.

"The first time (WrestleMania is) coming to New Orleans, thank God," said another fan, Travis Thomas.

WrestleMania XXX is expected to be a sellout, bringing fans from all 50 states and many countries across the world.

"It's my first WrestleMania, so I'm very excited, can't wait," said Jamal Jones, who drove in from Hattiesburg, Miss. to buy tickets.

Several WWE Superstars on hand at the presale event signed autographs and posed for pictures with fans.

"I'm blown away by how committed these fans are," said WWE's Sheamus, a three-time world champion. "The buzz around this city is amazing. I know that WrestleMania XXX here in New Orleans is going to be the greatest one yet. I can't wait to be involved in that week."

Local tourism leaders say WrestleMania brought with it a $100 million economic impact to last year's host city, Miami, and more than 84,000 people attended this year's event in New York City.

But if you want to know just how big this event is in the wrestling world, just ask the fans.

"It's the Super Bowl. It's the Super Bowl of wrestling," said Jimmy Crawford, of New Orleans. "I mean, all the celebrity stars come down here to get their thrill on. It's just a big-time thing coming to New Orleans and we're going to show them how to party."

WrestleMania XXX is set for April 6, 2014 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
