Mt. Hermon, La. - Washington Parish deputies say they were forced to shoot a man after he allegedly pointed a rifle at them during a standoff.

Deputies were called to the 37000 block of Highway 438 in Mt. Hermon Sunday morning after receiving reports of gunshots in a home where Johnnie Ryals had allegedly been threatening his girlfriend.

When deputies arrived, they found 56 year-old Ryals armed with multiple weapons.

Police say the man became enraged about treatment he was receiving through the Affordable Care Act.

They say Ryals continued to threaten deputies and was shot in the ear by a sniper after he pointed a rifle at them a second time.

Ryals was transported to the hospital.

He is now in the Washington Parish jail being held on a $300,000 bond.
