Hit and run leaves woman dead, 2-year-old boy in critical condition

Updated:

UPDATE: The Orleans Parish Coroner has identified the 29-year-old woman as Danielle Rhone and the 2-year-old boy as Kaedan Boyd.

NEW ORLEANS - Police are investigating a hit and run that left a 28-year-old woman dead and her 2-year-old nephew in critical condition in New Orleans East.

At about 1 a.m. on I-10 Westbound at the high-rise, a dark-colored Impala pulled over after becoming inoperable. The passengers, 28-year-old Daniell Rhone and her 2-year-old nephew Kaedan Boyd exited the vehicle.

Around that time a nearby black Chevy Tahoe was rear-ended by a Ford truck. As part of a chain reaction from that accident, Rhone and Boyd were struck by one of those cars or by a different car that fled the scene. They were thrown over the railing, killing the woman and injuring the toddler. The 2-year-old is now listed in critical condition.

The three vehicles remained on the bridge, but the driver of the Ford truck fled the scene.  Detectives believe other vehicles were involved in the incident, but fled the scene as well.

Police are looking for a white Chevy Suburban with an unknown license plate and damage to the passenger's side of the vehicle that they believe fled the scene of the incident.

The drivers and passengers of the other vehicles are believed to have non-life threatening injuries.

The investigation is ongoing and no citations were issued.

Blood and alcohol tests are pending and the Orleans Parish Coroner will conduct an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
