Sheriff Gusman hosts annual Thanksgiving dinner

New Orleans, La. - The annual Orleans Parish Thanksgiving dinner didn't disappoint the hundreds of people who packed the free event at the Morial Convention center Thursday. Since it first began 39 years ago, organizers says its grown in attendance from a few hundred people to an estimated 2, 600 people.

"We have the homeless, the elderly, students, families. We really have a broad cross section of the community here," said Orleans Parish Sheriff Marlin Gusman. He says donations helps pay for the holiday event.

Many like Evelyn Johnson says she used to come for years with her mother. Now she continues to attend to keep up the tradition.

"I think Thanksgiving is a family tradition . So when family is gone you still have that family tradition," said Johnson.

Organizers say at least 400 volunteers turned out to help serve the food.

This year organizers also set up and area to provide clothing for those in need. They say without the generosity of so many, it would not be possible to put on the annual event.

Thanks to the generosity of so many, hundreds were not only able to nourish their bodies but their spirit as well on this Thanksgiving .
