Many celebrate Thanksgiving tradition at the Fair Grounds

Updated:

NEW ORLEANS - As the horses parade onto the track, anticipation builds.

The bell rings, and they're off!

It's the day thousands have been waiting for.

"This is a family event. Some people have been coming here with their families for over 20 years," says Tim Bryant

Following the tradition, they start young. Most bring their children to experience the fun.

"Well, it's such a blast for the kids. They get to see the horses, be right up by the track, and some even get to pet the horses. They love that," says Mike Higgins.

For the adults, it's time to place bets and celebrate.

"We meet in the morning for drinks across the street and then come to the race track before going home for Turkey," says Lycia Ferguson.

"What a great tradition! We've got people showing up with great hats," says Bryant.

Tradition is accompanied by a Thanksgiving feast in the sold-out club level.

"Everybody's dressed up and enjoying the holidays," says Tommy Latiolais.

This is the 142nd meet at the Fair Grounds.

"Some say it was kicked off about 150 years ago. It's the third-oldest track in the United States, so there's so much history surrounding the Fair Grounds," says Bryant.

"I love the races, and I'm winning so that's good," says Latiolais
