Covington police captain put on leave after discharging weapon in police department

COVINGTON, La. - Covington Police Department Captain Jack West has been placed on paid administrative leave after accidentally discharging a shotgun inside the police department.

West was training a new recruit on how to use a 12-gauge shotgun on the afternoon of Dec. 11, but didn't check to see if the weapon was loaded. The gun fired into the ceiling, not harming anyone.

West has been place on paid administrative leave while the department conducts an internal investigation in accordance with civil service guidelines.

West was one of the officers involved in a recent internal investigation after two referees were arrested at a high school football game.
