Saints struggle to get things going in first half, losing to Rams 24-3

New Orleans -- Drew Brees threw interceptions on the Saints' first two possessions of the game, and the St. Louis Rams converted the consecutive turnovers into points en route to a commanding 24-3 halftime lead.

Brees' first pass of the game was picked off by T.J. McDonald deep in Saints territory at the 31-yard line. On the very next play, Kellen Clemons connected with Cory Harkey, who made several Saints defenders miss on his way to a touchdown and a 7-0 lead.

On the ensuing New Orleans drive, the Saints marched deep into St. Louis territory, but once again, Brees threw an errant pass, this time into double coverage.

The Rams responded with a nine-play, 57-yard scoring drive, capped off with a four-yard TD pass from Clemons to Lance Kendricks. St. Louis led 14-0 after the first quarter.

And they weren't done yet. After successfully executing an onside kick, the Rams put three more points on the board with a Greg Zuerlein 31-yard field goal that made the game 17-0.

The Saints would move back into the Rams' redzone, however Robert Quinn sacked Brees on third down to force a Garrett Hartley field goal. The 45-yarder was good as New Orleans cut the deficit to 17-3.

Then later in the quarter, Rams rookie running back Zac Stacy ripped off a 40-yard touchdown to increase the lead to 24-3.

To make things worse, the Saints had a field goal attempt blocked with just seconds left in the half.

Brees finished the half 16-of-21 for 169 yards and the two interceptions.
