METAIRIE, La. - Two days after missing a field goal and having another blocked, kicker Garrett Hartley has been cut by the Saints.

For the season, the sixth-year man out of Oklahoma was 22 for 30 on field goals. The team worked out five different kickers on Nov. 12 after a string of Hartley misses, but a game-winning field goal against the 49ers on Nov. 17 appeared to have reinvigorated Hartley's confidence, going 5-for-5 before St. Louis.

Sean Payton was asked Monday if he would consider making a change at kicker.

"I think we're looking closely at every element," he said. "I told the players today at the team meeting we're looking closely at each aspect of this team. I think in not trying to read into my answer, it's important for us to do that. I think that whether it's a tackle position, whether it's a player on defense, I think the one thing I know I don't want to do is repeat the process over and over again. We're going to look closely at what our options are and what gives us our best chance to play this coming week and one week remaining."

During Jim Henderson's Web Chat Monday evening, the voice of the Saints pondered the other options if the team did decide to part ways with Hartley.

"To hit it that bad, he looks like he's gone back into a slump again so what do you do now, at this point in the season to cure it?" Henderson said. "They brought in other kickers, but at this point in the season, do you really want to bring in somebody when your playoff hopes and the chance to be the No. 2 seed in the conference is on the line, you're going to bring in a kicker who's probably unproven or who's been out on the streets for a long time and at this point in the season, anybody who is out there is really at the bottom of the sale bin at the rummage sale because all of these guys have been picked over all year long by all of these teams who have had injuries and problems so really the dregs are all that's left. Do you want to go back and try to do that?"
