WASHINGTON - You may not feel so bad about your homeowners insurance bill when you hear what people pay for coverage in Florida.

According to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, the average policy costs Louisiana homeowners about $1,672 a year. That's well above the national average of $978.

People in Florida pay more. The average policy in that state costs $1,933. That's nearly double the national average.

Texas has the third-most expensive policies. The average policy there costs about $1,578.

Insurance experts say the policies in Louisiana, Florida and Texas are so expensive because they're designed to cover windstorm losses.
