FRANKLINTON, La. - A man set his own home on fire with the body of his dead mother inside after shooting a neighbor and a police officer Thursday night, according to the Washington Parish Sheriff's Office.

According to the Sheriff's Office, one of the victims was returning home on 16th Avenue near Lenora when his neighbor, Christopher Rashad Dillon, approached him and demanded money. The victim said he did not have any money on him and was shot in the arm. He is currently in the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Dillon then returned to his home and barricaded himself inside. Dillon shot at one of the officers responding to the shooting, but thanks to the officer's flak jacket he was only shot in the arm. A spokesman with the sheriff's office said the bullet-proof vest likely saved his life.

Police said Dillon then set fire to his own home before eventually surrendering. After the fire was put out police said the dead body of Dillon's mother, Robin Dillon was found inside the burned home. According to the Washington Parish Coroner, Robin Dillon died of a single gunshot wound.

Dillon was treated for injuries at the River Parish Hospital and was then booked in the Washington Parish Jail on two charges of Attempted First-Degree Murder of a Police Officer and Aggravated Arson.

A deadly virus is threatening the crawfish industry in Southwest Louisiana. It's called white spot syndrome virus and it was first discovered in Thailand, but somehow it made its way to ponds in South Louisiana and specialists are struggling to find the funds to research a solution.  “The catch was increasing and increasing and then it dropped 70% and that's when you saw the dead crawfish floating in the water,” said a crawfish farmer of 34 years, Ian Garbarino.
