Some workers, businesses see Christmas as day of opportunity

NEW ORLEANS - Across the French Quarter Wednesday, the holiday spirit was alive and well.

"People are festive. It's been a great day," said carriage tour guide Cindy Schmidt.

For most people, Christmas is a chance to spend time with family and enjoy a day off of work, but for others, like Schmidt, it's another chance to make some money.

"I actually came out on my Christmas Day because it's usually a really good day for us," she said. "People like to go for a carriage ride. It's kind of a festive thing to do."

Lucky Dog vendor Darryl Lindsey typically works this day, and says he doesn't mind at all.

"There's quite a few restaurants closed today, and I'm the only restaurant you see open," he joked. "Lots of good spirits walking around, people wishing each other Merry Christmas."

For some businesses, being open on Christmas provides plenty of opportunity.

Rock N' Bowl Owner John Blancher said he's noticed that for many people, getting out and about for a good time on Christmas night out has grown in popularity.

"I'm expecting between 400 and 600 people tonight," Blancher said.

For the past few years, Blancher has hosted a special Benny Grunch Christmas concert at his venue.

"We were never open on Christmas night until after Katrina and Benny (Grunch) came to me and said, 'Look, you wanna try Christmas night.'"

"Musicians, we're accustomed to working any holiday," Grunch said, shortly before taking the stage Wednesday.

Blancher said it's become a fun event for all involved.

"My staff, we're closed Christmas Eve and they had off all day. They're ready to get out of the house," he said. "Christmas has always been a family time for me. You know, we had Christmas at my house with all my grand kids, and all my grand kids are coming here tonight to spend Christmas over here."

"Christmas night has always been a good time here," he said.
