NEW ORLEANS - Warren Day loved to skate and competed in national competitions up and down the East Coast and here at home, gaining recognition among the skateboarding community.

"He was just perfect - a textbook skateboarder," said Paul Trinh. "I looked up to him, and I was older than him."

"Any spare moment he had, he was in school," said Ashley Degeyter. "He studied a lot, but when he wasn't studying, he was skating."

The 36-year-old was a student at UNO, studying to become a marine biologist.

Day was also a huge Saints fan. Sunday night, he gathered with friends to watch the game at their usual spot, the Balcony Bar on Magazine Street.

"Everybody was super happy about the win, especially Warren," Degeyter said.

"All I heard is that he fell off the balcony at the Balcony Bar, and he had severe brain injuries," Trinh said. "As soon as I heard, I ran to the hospital and it turned for the worst."

Day's friends say he was put in a medically induced coma, and on New Year's Eve, he passed away.

"We were really hopeful, because he was such a strong person," Degeyter said.

"You don't use the word lightly, 'best friend,'" said Trinh. "He was that guy to everyone. It's the most tragic thing to ever happen."

Day has been described as a person who always gave to others. Appropriately, he was an organ donor.

"He's going to save someone's life," said Degeyter. "It's one last gift, you know?"

Day's friends say he will be sorely missed. They are planning to hold a second-line parade in his honor sometime this weekend.
