Northshore residents prepare for plunging temperatures

Updated:

SLIDELL, La. - At Heritage Park in Slidell Friday, people were bundled up.

With temperatures expected to dip into the upper 20s on the Northshore early Saturday morning, and the potential of a plunge into the teens early next week, some said they're getting ready.

"We're preparing for it," said Jo Beth Kavanaugh. "We're really, really not wintry people."

That was a common theme from people we caught up with as they rushed into the Slidell Lowes to stock up on supplies.

"I just covered my plants. The pets are inside and we'll probably run a little dripping water," said Shirley McCray.

"I'm making plans to seal my pipes up and make sure they don't burst tonight and then I'd have to get up in the cold weather tomorrow to do it," said Allen Frederick.

At Northshore Ace Hardware, sales have been brisk.

"We're seeing more of a run on pipe insulation, faucet covers, firewood, propane, things like that," said Larry Gillio, a manager.

Gillio said temperatures simply dipping below freezing doesn't typically cause too much of a stir around Slidell, but with a much colder forecast in the coming days, he said people are taking the situation seriously.

"Firewood has been going. We're through our second delivery here in the last couple days, but I have more firewood coming in (Saturday). It's been going faster today than it has in the last couple years," he said.
