Hammond High, Hammond Eastside cancels classes Tuesday

Hammond, La. - Tangipahoa Parish school system officials will cancel classes at Hammond Eastside Elementary and Hammond High Magnet Schools Tuesday due to an inadequate power supply at those two sites east of Hammond.

School Superintendent Mark Kolwe said Entergy was experiencing problems delivering adequate power to the schools early Tuesday.

Due to the extreme winter weather conditions and concerns about being able to provide consistent heating to the schools, Kolwe said school officials decided to cancel classes at the two sites for Tuesday.

Because students are already enroute to or are on campus, Kolwe said bus service will be utilized to return students home this morning. HHMS students will be dismissed at 9 a.m., and Hammond Eastside students will be dismissed at 10 a.m.  Kolwe said parents may come earlier to pick up their children, if they so choose.

Kolwe said bus drivers have been directed not to dismiss elementary students off the bus unless a parent or guardian is home to receive the child.

Kolwe said he expects the power issue to be resolved later today.
