Plumbers kept busy by frigid weather

Updated:

COVINGTON, La. - Casey Sanford responded to more than a dozen calls of busted pipes in the past two days.

"I was all over yesterday and all over today, and the job's just keep on coming," he says.

No job as unique as the one on a farm in Folsom where the pipe to the pig pen froze Tuesday night.

Plumbers across the area spent another busy day replacing pipes that cracked in the cold.

Roto Rooter reported a 21 percent increase in calls for service in Orleans, Jefferson, St. Charles and St. John Parishes, compared to the same week last year.

Goodbee Plumbing on the northshore fielded more than 30 calls Tuesday, and another 16 Wednesday after the temperature rose and pipes began to thaw.

A homeowner in Covington left only the cold water running throughout the night.

"But this is the hot line and it wasn't being run so it, as you can see, obviously froze right here in the center," says master plumber Scott Harrison.

Harrison has been in the business more than 20 years. He's used to getting calls after a hard freeze and says this time was no different.

"It's about average," says Harrison. "It's not the worst, but it certainly keeps you busy when it happens."

While frozen pipes are no longer a concern this week, Harrison expects to be busy over the next few days.

"I don't think we're going to have any more issues, it's just a matter of catching up to what's already happened I think," he says.

It will also be a long work week for Sanford, wherever he ends up.

"Big houses, farms, in the middle of a parking lot, anywhere," he says. "Wherever they got pipes outside, they're gonna break."
