Archdiocese of NO collects $500,000 for typhoon relief

New Orleans, La. - The people of the Philippines, still recovering from Typhoon Haiyan, will soon be getting more than a half a million thanks to contributions pouring in to the Archdiocese of New Orleans.  Archbishop Gregory Aymond says the Archdiocese has collected $527,655.82 so far, and that more donations are continuing to come into their offices.

"I am continually humbled by the generosity of the people of New Orleans and the surrounding area," said Archbishop Aymond. "I am overcome too by a sense of pride in the people of my hometown, many of whom know what it is like to lose everything, who offer prayers and  give so generously of themselves when tragedy strikes others."

A portion of the funds will be sent to Catholic Relief Services (www.crs.org), the Catholic bishops international assistance agency working in the Philippines and the rest will be sent to the Philippine Catholic bishops to provide direct assistance to their people and to rebuild and reopen churches, schools and social services agencies.

The outpouring of generosity came from throughout the archdiocese with individuals and families sending in their contributions as well as church parishes and schools sending it what they collected for typhoon relief.

"The people of New Orleans continue to answer God's call to love one another by both giving of their time in prayer and by giving money to help the people of the Philippines recover," added the archbishop.

Those still wanting to make a monetary donation to help the people of the Philippines may send it to:
